Business Phone System Installation Scenarios

Telecommuting Installation Example

In this scenario, Kimberly is an outside sales rep for a company in Cincinnati.  She covers the Southwestern United States region, and lives in Phoenix.  Kimberly has a DSL line coming into her office which is in her home.  The main office in Cincinnati has an Asterisk server, and a high speed internet connection.  Kimberly has a telephone on her desk that connects to her DSL line.

  • A caller contacts the Cincinnati office by dialing the toll-free 800 number of the home office. The caller listens to the directory of extensions for the sales department, which offers choices for each region.  The caller selects the Southwestern region.  Asterisk tells them the extension number for Kimberly, announces her name, and then announces it will connect the caller to her.

  • The Asterisk server in Cincinnati rings the telephone on Kimberly’s desk (which is in Phoenix).  Since this call is being made over the internet, over Kimberly’s DSL line, there is no long distance charge between Kimberly and the home office in Cincinnati.  If Kimberly doesn’t answer within six rings, the caller is given the choice of leaving a voice mail message for Kimberly, returning to the Sales directory, or talking to the operator.

  • If the caller leaves a voice mail message for Kimberly, the Asterisk server will send an email message to Kimberly’s email account advising her of the message. In addition, the Asterisk server also attaches a wav file to the email which contains a recording of  the actual message left by the caller.  Kimberly has the option of listening to this voice mail message using her PC OR calling her extension number to listen to the message — or both.

  • On days that Kimberly knows she is going to be out of her home office making sales calls, Kimberly has the option of forwarding all calls from her office phone in her home to her cell phone.
