How a Digital VoIP Business Phone System Fits Into Your Data Network

Diagram Explanation

In the below diagram you'll see a typical installation in which there is a Main/Home Office, one Regional/Branch Office and one Remote User/Telecommuter. For simplicity sake we are limiting the number of user extensions, regional offices and remote users in this diagram to one but in reality there is no practical limit.

The red dashed lines represent the VoIP data path. The blue dashed lines represent the existing telephone lines (aka "PSTN" - The Phone Company). You'll notice that calls between the Main Office, the Regional Office and the Remote Users do not pass through the PSTN. They are 100% VoIP and as such are essentially free since these calls are being placed over the public internet. For example, someone in the Home Office at extension 1001 can dial the person in the regional office (whereever it is) by simply dialing a 2000 series number (e.g. 2001). The same holds true for any of the remote users. In this simple example we are using a different series of extension numbers to represent where that person is physically located throughout the company (1000 series = Home Office, 2000 series = Regional Office and 3000 series = Remote / Telecommuters). This is only one example and your imagination is literally the limit as to what can be done .

Calls coming in from or out to Customers/Vendors can be completed using your existing PSTN phone connection (the blue dashed lines.) As an alternative, you can setup an account with a VoIP Service Provider (e.g. VoicePulse, Teliax, VoIPJet). Doing so will enable you to originate and terminate calls to the PSTN via your VoIP network (the red dashed lines). You should see a significant cost savings by originating and terminating calls to the PSTN through a VoIP Service Provider. In addition, with the open source Business Phone System PBX, there is no limit to the number of VoIP service providers you use on a server. This allows you to build an unlimited number of inbound and outbound routes (dialing patterns) based on your company's calling patterns, thereby maximizing your savings.

As an example, there are VoIP Service Providers who specialize in flat rate 8xx toll-free service. There are others who specialize in flat rate outbound long distance to the US. And still others who specialize in flat rate inbound in which you choose the area code and phone number. The same holds true for international dialing. With several hundred VoIP Service Providers available today (and the number is growing) the possibilities are endless.
